The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has scooped the prestigious 2024 Most Innovative Knowledge Enterprise (MIKE) South Africa Gold Award. The award recognises GMA’s exceptional efforts in harnessing its collective knowledge and expertise, leading to better decision-making, innovation, and competitive advantage. The MIKE Award is one of the highest accolades in the Knowledge Management field and recognises organisations across the world that demonstrate excellence in knowledge management and innovative practices. GMA is recognised as the first organisation in Africa to win this prestigious award.

“In the fast-changing business world of today, innovation is a necessity for survival, growth, and success. The MIKE Award is a source of great pride for GMA and speaks to our knowledge-sharing culture, which is a catalyst for innovation, productivity, and a dynamic work environment. I’m grateful to Dr Refiloe Mabaso, Head of Information and Knowledge Management at Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS), who received the GMA MIKE award at Bangkok University in March 2025 on behalf of the GMA. Her continuous support and guidance to the GMA KM Team is invaluable,” says Tshepo Kgobe PMP, GMA Chief Executive Officer.

On the 9th of April, Dr Mabaso, accompanied by the chairperson of Knowledge Management South Africa (KMSA), Ms Kelebogile Mosimege and the ATNS Knowledge Management team, brought the award to the GMA offices. The award was well received by the GMA team led by the Acting Chief Operating Officer, Mr Siyabonga Mabaso.

“This remarkable victory and achievement by GMA stands as a powerful testament to the profound impact that knowledge management (KM) can have on the success of organisations. It highlights how effective KM practices can drive innovation, improve decision-making, and enhance overall performance. As KM professionals, we should view this milestone as a source of inspiration, motivating us to continue our work passionately and to educate those around us about the value of knowledge management.
GMA, as the first organisation in South Africa and the African continent to be honoured with the MIKE Award, has set a significant benchmark for other organisations to learn from and aspire to be associated with. This achievement highlights GMA's commitment to excellence and emphasises the significance of cultivating a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within organisations,” says Kelebogile Mosimege, KMSA Chairperson.

The presence of KMSA is a testament and evidence of the industry support, encouragement and collaboration that it takes for Knowledge Management to thrive as a discipline in South Africa. The GMA shared their knowledge and insights on the MIKE submission requirements through a webinar on the 21st of May 2025. A sure way to encourage knowledge management practitioners in South Africa to highlight the excellent work being done in their respective organisations. This aligns perfectly with fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and continuous improvement through knowledge management.
